Chapter5

At a Certain Time

Perhaps?perhaps life is a single space, bound together by a common principle, expanding without end.

And each of those lives is shared with all the others.
Nothing exists by itself.

And if, by some chance, even one small life were never to exist in this world,
then perhaps this entire universe would never have existed in the first place.

Therefore, the word existence does not simply mean life.
Death, too, is part of it.
Death, too, is a form of existence.
Existence moves from life into death, and life comes from death.

And yet, strangely,
nothing can remain in life forever, nor can it remain in death.
Every life, without exception, has its ending and its rebirth.
The great planets, and every living thing on this blue planet we call home,
repeat their endings and rebirths, transforming the shared space in which they exist.

Each has its own cycle,
a cycle that belongs to it alone,
and no two are ever the same.
The ceaseless cycles weave together and create a space
with neither beginning nor end.

If this space were ever to have an end,

at some time, in some place,
one small life comes to the end of its existence,
in life and in death,

and, as it quietly disappears,
the whole begins slowly to fade
toward the end of existence.
