Aki Fukakusa Profile
Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1949. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at Keio University, Fukakusa worked as a bassist with groups including Far East Family Band and 観世音(Kanzeon, whose recordings were released on CD in 1991). He also contributed as a bassist to the albums 地球空洞説(The Cave Down To The Earth), Parallel World(A recording made at The Manor Studio in Oxford.), and 天空人(Tenkūjin).
After that, In 1979, he encountered a mysterious musical instrument at an antique flea market. Its name was unknown, and the instrument was already in a state of decay. Drawing on his experience as a musician, he began to restore the instrument, develop its tuning, explore its playing techniques, and compose music for it. Through this process, he gradually developed a distinctive approach to the instrument and forged a unique sonic language. Only later did he learn that it was the qinqin (秦琴), a traditional Chinese plucked lute.
In 1986, he released his first album, Qinqin, as a qinqin player. Alongside his own compositions, he has created and performed music for a wide range of productions. That same year, he composed the theme music for Tetsuya Chikushi's News Jockey on TBS Radio. In 1987, he performed background music for the NHK historical drama Takeda Shingen. In 1989, he served as musical director, composer, and performer for Tamasaburo Bando's stage production 玉三郎 in 姫路.
From 1995 to 1999, he composed and performed the theme music for three NHK television dramas based on Tomiko Miyao's novels: 蔵, 春燈, and 櫂. In 1996, he composed the music for the Kansai Television Hi-Vision drama 雪の夜の微塵となりて眠るかな~湖・三橋節子伝説. In 1999, he composed the music for the Kansai Television documentary drama 谷崎潤一郎 その愛.
In 2000, he composed the music for Tamasaburo Bando's stage production 海神別荘. In 2006, he composed the music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, based on Shakespeare's play and starring Shoroku Onoe, presented at Nissay Theatre in Tokyo and Shochikuza Theatre in Osaka.
Over the years, he has explored new possibilities of sound by combining silk strings with a variety of effects and sound equipment. His performances have taken place at venues including Sogetsu Hall, Aichi Koseinenkin Hall, Spiral Hall, Restaurant CAY, the regular concerts at Hanahubuki in Izu Kogen, concerts at the Watanabe Residence, a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property, collaboration with 演劇倶楽部『座』and the Okuri-bi concert at 長応寺 in Otsuki.
In recent years, however, he has set aside all electronic equipment. He now performs without a microphone, using only the natural sound of his instrument, his voice, and the spoken word.
To date, he has released fifteen works in total, including a DVD and reissued editions.
